Endo Records is in Kendall, in South Miami-Dade — what made this part of the area the right place for the shop, and what's the origin story behind it?

Endo Records is located in Kendall, not quite homestead. While most of the population is dense around the main Miami record scene. There are a lot of people who live further down south, kendall and lower that would love to go record shopping but have no place to call their record home.

Miami has a big and stylistically wild record scene — Sweat, Radio-Active, Lucky, Yesterday & Today, Technique on the DJ side. What role does Endo play in the South Dade part of the metro that the shops up in Miami proper don't cover?

We like to pride ourselves in carrying everything, while YnT is classic rock, Sweat is new releases, and Lucky is rap. We carry all of that and more, We carry everything from newest releases, to japanese imports, to rare first pressing you won't find anywhere else.

When somebody walks in with a box of records to sell, what makes a collection an easy yes for you in the first thirty seconds — the tells you look for before you've even started pricing?

All records are inspected before purchased. First impression matter so we look for Tote bag vs dusty old box. When someone brings in a tote bag it’s generally an indication that the records were cared for, kept in a home that was well taken care of. A dusty cardboard box tells me these sat in a storage unit and were forgotten about. Often generic pressings that you can find anywhere.

Miami has a serious Latin, salsa, freestyle, and dance-music history, and a lot of the collections that walk in reflect that. What genres are the strongest for you in South Dade specifically, and what always surprises sellers about what does and doesn't move?

Our top sellers are classic rock, rap, and grunge. Which being right across from MDC Kendall, it doesn't surprise us as that's exactly what the kids are listening to these days.

South Florida has extreme heat, humidity, and hurricane-season storage problems that most of the country doesn't face. What condition damage do you see most in Miami-area collections, and what would you tell a seller to do differently to protect records here?

Most common thing we see is water damage, both from water and the high humidity. Older records just don't survive the 30% plus humidity of a garage. I'd say keep them indoors, and sleeve your records.

A lot of people inherit a parent's or grandparent's records and walk in hopeful — Latin classics, salsa 45s, old rock. What's the honest picture: how often does an inherited Miami collection turn out to have real value, and what's usually in it when it does?

I'd say the majority of collections are generic pressings. Some of the stuff sells for $10 maybe $20 dollars with a handful of good finds and original pressings. It really takes the right person to have collected grails and originals and those come in less often.

When you're pricing a mixed collection in front of a seller — some records worth a couple dollars, others worth much more — how do you walk them through the reasoning so they leave feeling the number was fair?

All our pricing is off of discogs median, now the condition changes that number drastically. But we will always give the customer 2 numbers, the price that we think the entire collection would sell for individually on discogs, and price we are willing to buy it at. That way they can see the true value vs offer.

Endo has become a place people go out of their way for in Kendall. How did the shop come together, and what did you learn early on about opening a record store outside the main Miami cluster?

The store started as a dream, that one day someone would open up a record store in kendall so, at the time, us Kendall folk didn't have to drive so far to record shop. The goal was never to compete with the other record stores but rather to have a small taste so you didn't need to drive so far to shop. As the store grew, customer demand grew, and so did our services. We opened into a larger location, started hosting release events and community events, and launched our website for our worldwide customers. With plenty of shelf space to carry such a large selection of records, we went from a small hidden gem to the cornerstone of music in the Kendall area.
