HiFi Hair and Records

Record store in Minneapolis, MN

HiFi Hair and Records on Hennepin started as a hair salon, with the record side added later as both a practical move and a natural extension of the vibe. The result is a Minneapolis spot where locals, tourists, touring musicians, salon regulars, and record shoppers all cross paths - with local Twin Cities labels and a sense of humor helping define the shop.

Interview with HiFi Hair and Records

A salon and a record shop under one roof is a rare combination. How did those two worlds end up together, and how do they feed each other day to day?

we started out as a hair salon. The record store came to fruition as my idea to make sure I didn't get stuck with a lousy neighbor, and would serve well as a cool waiting room

Do haircut customers wander over to the bins and get hooked, or do the record people mostly come in already knowing?

It's a great mix of people that already know we are here, and hair clients that like the idea of a one stop shop.

Being right on Hennepin - what kind of mix does that bring through the door?

We get a great mix of locals, tourists and touring musicians

Your record side leans rock and audio gear. What sells in Minneapolis that maybe wouldn't elsewhere?

It has become known that we cater to our local bands and musicians, so local twin city labels are always sought after

If someone wants to sell you records or stereo equipment, what should they know before reaching out?

That I will be fair with them. I am not looking to make a killing on my resale prices

Minnesota basements and attics are rough on vinyl. What condition problems do you see most in local collections?

everyone thinks they are sitting on a gold mine with their musty moldy Beatles records

Does Minneapolis music history - the whole weight of it - still shape what customers expect to find?

Yes. It not only shapes what people are looking for, but the bar that has been set in quality of recordings

What's the record that's been sitting in the shop too long, just waiting for the right person to walk in?

When ever a record comes in with funny graffiti on it, I price it at a ridiculous level. I currently have a Foreigner record that somebody wrote "SUCKS" on I priced it at $299.99 because I like to collect those for my own entertainment
