Interview with Ignition Music Garage
Ignition is a record store that's also a listening room and a gathering place. Which came first in the vision - the records or the music happening live?
Both were part of the original vision. The Globe's (Goshen College) satellite radio station, which sits in the front of our shop, was also part of the original vision.
What do the shows do to the store - do people discover the bins because they came for a concert?
It works both ways. I hear people who come to shows say they didn't realize this place existed. The same happens when folks come to shop and I see their jaw hit the floor when I mention our shows.
Goshen is a small city with a surprisingly strong arts pulse. What does that mean for what sells?
We have a lot of tourists too! People come to shop our many amazing small businesses downtown, visit their kids at college, or perhaps just pass through on business. I meet people every day from all parts of the world.
What genres do best with your crowd - and what's been quietly growing?
Hard rock and metal are very popular in our shop. J-Pop and City Jazz from Japan have been making a well-earned but surprising run. Also CDs have become collectible again.
If someone in Michiana wants to sell records, what's the best way to start - and what makes a collection interesting to you?
Well kept records make us giddy!!! Looking at a collection that has been cared for is the most fun. Eclectic collections are also interesting. There is rarely a collection that comes through that doesn't have something we can sell.
Best way to start a conversation with us is to call (574) 971-8282 or email julie@ignitionmusic.net and tell us a bit about the collection. We will travel for the right collection!
What condition issues come up most in the collections you see?
Warping and water damage from poorly stored albums. Scratches, obviously. Albums that smell strongly of cigarette smoke, have been written on, or have deteriorating covers are also issues we commonly see (or smell).
What's a night or a find at Ignition that captures what the place is about?
Record Store Day in April is the most exciting day to be at any participating indie record store!
First visit - what should someone time their trip around?
Any time is a good time to visit. Checking our website ahead of time to see if we have a show would be the best thing to do if coming from out of town. We don't do a lot of shows as we focus on quality over quantity.
Our room is well-tuned, and people always compliment our sound (not too loud, not too soft + good acoustics). Musicians also enjoy playing our room because they sound "the way they're supposed to." We always have a professional sound engineer to work with the band during sound check and monitor throughout the show. We have recently significantly upgraded our professional lighting system to give an all-around more immersive experience.
